KORU® grower stories

"NZ grows the best apples in the world"

- Tony Gilbertson, Hastings, New Zealand

Our story:

In 1968 while working for the New Zealand Apple & Pear Board as a Mechanical Engineer, Tony spoke to established orchardists who convinced him that apple growing was a good industry to be in. Due to the enthusiasm of the ‘older growers’, Tony started orcharding in 1970 planting the then popular varieties of Red Delicious, Granny Smith & Red Dougherty. Tony and Virginia now live amongst 36 acres of orchard consisting of Sunrise, Royal Gala, Galaxy, KORU® Plumac c.v., Pacific Queen and Pacific Rose.

Industry wide, Tony was involved in the Pipfruit Growers of New Zealand Inc for 5-6 years during the deregulation. More recently, he was part of the Australian Access Committee which gained access for New Zealand apples into Australia.

Our involvement in KORU® Plumac c.v:

Tony is always at the leading edge with new varieties and planted some of the first test trees of Plumac which was promoted as a potentially ‘brilliant new apple’. After evaluating the variety over for several years, he said ‘It was easy to assess it as a world class apple and if the opportunity came along one should plant it.’

Tony planted his first commercial planting in 2008 and it has now become a significant variety in his orchard. Tony says, ‘As a grower you need to have a variety in the mix that is worldwide, with excellent taste, and world wide appeal. KORU® Brand apple meets that.’

What we think is special about us:

Tony says ‘New Zealand growers have become known Internationally as growing fruit of excellence. We now submit to diverse markets and provide excellent fruit and the NZ market has grown up to where it needs to be. This can be attributed to quality management and growing practices country
